The Experience
-

Arrival and Exploration
The evening begins by the river. Guests settle in with a drink, explore the riverbank, visit the batteaux, and encounter the history of the working James.
Nearby, Chef Sarah Rennie of Two Fire Table cooks over open fire, with the meal unfolding in real time.
-

Dinner on the Batteaux
Guests gather aboard the batteaux moored at the water’s edge for a chef-led, fire-cooked supper.
Dinner is served on the boats themselves, with live acoustic music and the river all around. This is the heart of the evening — fire, table, and river coming together.
-

Fireside Finish
After supper, guests return to the riverbank for dessert, firelight, and conversation.
The evening comes to a close with time to linger by the James as the fire burns low.

A New Format for 2026
Farm to Batteau is entering a new chapter this season. In past years, the experience moved downriver as a dinner cruise. This year, we’re dining at the water’s edge.
The dinner-on-the-water experience remains at the heart of the evening: supper is still served aboard the batteaux on the James. Our new private riverside setting allows us to expand the format with restrooms, firelight, music, and more time to soak in the scene.
Two Fire Table
A Southern Appalachian native, Sarah Rennie began her love of cooking with fire in a wood-fired bakery in Asheville, NC. It was there that she learned the importance of seasonal cooking and supporting local farms.
After working for many great chefs in the area, she moved to Richmond, VA to manage three time James Beard nominated, Sub Rosa Bakery.
Additionally in an effort to enrich her knowledge and skills, Sarah spent time traveling in the American West and in South America to study foods and cultures that surround open fire cooking.
